Hilary Swank Opens Up About Taking 3-Year Hiatus From Acting to Take Care of Ailing Father

Hilary Swank is happy to back at work after taking some much needed time off from acting.

In 2015, the 43-year-old actress announced that she would be leaving the limelight for a while to take care of her father, Stephen Swank, who started living with her after getting a lung transplant.

Hilary made an appearance on The Late Show on Tuesday and was asked by host Stephen Colbert to give an update on her dad’s health.

“He’s great, thank you for asking,” she shared. “For those of you who don’t know, my dad got a lung transplant. It’s the hardest surgery a person can undergo and I thank all the people that make themselves a donor, it saves lives.”

Swank continued, “They had given him a short time to live if he didn’t get a lung transplant and thankfully he got one and he’s alive and thriving and well.”

The two-time Oscar winner doesn’t seem to have any regrets about her break from acting. “Yeah, I took three years off to be with him and help him through that life journey,” she said. When Colbert praised her for being a great daughter, she replied, “Well, what a lovely dad he is.”

Swank has always had a servant’s heart when it comes to taking care of her father, and even described being able to be there for him as “an honor” when she spoke with HuffPost Live in July 2015.

“There’s been job opportunities that I’ve passed on … But I mean, really, what we’re here for is our family, right?” she said. “There’s been a couple projects that are beautiful, but in the end, there’s nothing I want to do more other than being with my dad in his time of need. You can’t get this time back.”

Swank has now returned to acting and stars in FX’s Trust, premiering on March 25.
