Looks like there’s some truth after all to Selma Blair’s comments earlier this month that Cameron Diaz has retired.
Blair, Diaz and Christina Applegate recently reunited for a Q&A with Entertainment Weekly to talk about their 2002 comedy, The Sweetest Thing, when Diaz said she’s “retired.” The topic comes up when the stars are asked if the three have reunited since filming — Blair and Applegate say their children are friends, and Diaz says she wants to see her co-stars more often.
“Maybe I should, you know, I mean, I’m down,” Diaz says about meeting up. “I’m literally doing nothing.”
When Applegate says she also hasn’t worked in years and is “semi-retired” due to her duties as a mom, Diaz responds, “That’s so awesome. I’m totally down. I’m semi-retired, too, and I am actually retired, so I would love to see you ladies.”
Diaz last appeared in Annie in 2014. The 45-year-old actress married former Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden in January 2015.
Earlier this month, Blair clarified her comments to Metro UK that Diaz was done making movies.
“I would have liked to do a sequel but Cameron’s retired from acting,” Blair said, according to Metro UK. “She’s like, ‘I’m done.’ I mean, she doesn’t need to make any more films. She has a pretty great life, I don’t know what it would take to bring her back. She’s happy.”
Blair later tweeted that she was joking.
“Guys please, I was making a joke in an interview,” she wrote. “CAMERON DIAZ is NOT retiring from ANYTHING. And for more breaking news: I am NOW retiring from being Cameron Diaz’s spokesperson.”
Despite no longer working, Diaz has maintained her Hollywood friendships. The actress celebrated Women’s March 2018 in January with Jennifer Lawrence and Adele, and reunited with her Charlie’s Angels co-star, Drew Barrymore, last July.
Last June, Diaz talked about stepping back from acting at Goop’s Wellness Summit in Los Angeles.
“I just went, ‘I can’t really say who I am to myself.’ Which is a hard thing to face up to,” she shared. “I felt the need to make myself whole.”
She also talked about getting married at age 41.
“I think it’s a matter of I just hadn’t met my husband, you know?” she said. “I had boyfriends before. And there’s a really, really distinct difference between husbands and boyfriends. And I have a husband who is just my partner in life and in everything.”
