Star Trek: Discovery is boldly traveling to new heights.
The CBS All Access sci-fi series debuted a new minute-long teaser on Thursday, sharing a behind-the-scenes look at season two and offering a few intriguing clues about what lies ahead.
The freshman finale ended with the USS Discovery crew receiving a distress call from the iconic USS Enterprise, and it appears we’ll get answers almost immediately in the sophomore season following the exciting reveal.
“Every moment is a test and everywhere I turn, there’s fear,” Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) says ominously.
Later, we hear a few lines of dialogue from the original Star Trek TV series. First from Captain Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) of the Enterprise — the captain who led the starship before James T. Kirk — via the episode “The Cage”: “I’m responsible for 203 lives. I’m tired of deciding which mission is too risky, and which isn’t, and who lives, and who dies.” (Anson Mount will play Captain Pike in Discovery.)
Then, from Spock (Leonard Nimoy) via the episode “Space Seed”: “Insufficient facts always invite danger, Captain.” Another Spock line from the episode “The Immunity Syndrome”: “You speak about the objective hardness of the Vulcan heart, yet how little room there seems to be in yours.”
We know Michael’s surrogate dad, Sarek (James Frain), is Spock’s father; it’s very possible that season two could yield an introduction of the beloved character. In fact, Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s Jonathan Frakes — who directed a season one episode of Discovery — appeared to confirm at a recent fan convention that a young Spock would appear this season.
The clue-filled teaser — which includes a new alien and a preview of the updated uniforms — ends on Michael walking through a door as she says, “I’m responsible for forging my own path. We all are.” Watch the teaser below.
Star Trek: Discovery follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new life forms, and one Starfleet officer, Michael Burnham, must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. New additions to the series include Mount and comedian-actress Tig Notaro, who will play Chief Engineer Denise Reno of the USS Hiawatha.
