San Juan, Puerto Rico – In anticipation for tomorrow’s national strike for support of the teacher’s union in the island of Puerto Rico two employees from SEAR’s in the famous Plaza Las Americas Mall are seen boarding windows with storm guards.
In case you were wondering if there’s a storm coming, realize that the last time there was a national strike which was exactly on May 1st a year ago, hundreds if not thousands of activists and supporters walk down the banking district known as La Mina de Oro (tomorrow’s manifestation is expected to be in a similar route). The protest back then was against the raising of student tuition in the publicly own University of Puerto Rico. They estimate that there were millions of dollars in damages and a failed attempt by one of the student protesters to blow up one if the banking institutions, Banco Popular. There were many injuries and 27 participants were arrested, including the female student that made the attempt against the bank. The protesters did accomplish for the governor to intervene and prevented the raising of tuition fees, but with a high cost for those who now will have to live with criminal records and the immense vandalism that took place.
A public announcement was made by the judicial body in Puerto Rico indicating that the Justice Department will close all operations for tomorrow May 1st, 2018, in anticipation to the manifestions.
