New ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Poster Provides First Look at Michelle Pfeiffer’s Janet Van Dyne

Essentially the entirety of 2018 has been like Christmas for Marvel fans — and the gifts keep on coming. With Avengers: Infinity War now (breaking records) in theaters, Marvel is teasing their next movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp, with a colorful poster and a new trailer dropping Tuesday.

Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang (aka Ant-Man) and Evangeline Lilly’s Hope van Dyne (aka The Wasp) are front and center, but the one sheet also provides a look at the sequel’s new recruits, including Hannah John-Kamen as the villainous Ghost, Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster and Walton Goggins as Sonny Burch. Most exciting of all is just to Ant-Man’s right: Our first official look at Michelle Pfieffer’s Janet van Dyne.

From the looks of it, Janet is donning some sort of super suit here. Which tracks with what we learned in Ant-Man: That Janet, the O.G. Wasp, had gone subatomic and disappeared into the Quantum Realm. The fact that Scott Lang did the same and managed to return in one piece is what prompts the events of the sequel.

“Scott entered the Quantum Realm in the first film and came back, which is something they thought was impossible,” Lilly told Entertainment Weekly. “The question has arisen, ‘Can Janet come back?’ So the entire film, my character is hell-bent on finding a way to get into the Quantum Realm and bring her back.”

The poster arrived in tandem with a video, titled “Where Were Ant-Man and the Wasp?,” that addresses their absence from Avengers: Infinity War. “Maybe they were there, but they are pretty tiny. There were definitely some ants in Wakanda,” Tom Hiddleston jokes. “Maybe they’re in the same place as Hawkeye?” Scarlett Johansson says.

Delving into some minor Infinity War spoilers — if you haven’t seen the movie yet, you should stop reading here — we now know that Ant-Man and Hawkeye essentially were in the same place: under house arrest, after striking a deal with the government following the events of Captain America: Civil War.

“He was a fugitive at the end of that movie, so we have to answer that question… A guy who’s a fugitive has to have a solution for being a fugitive, especially when he has a family,” Infinity War co-director Joe Russo told ET of Hawkeye, adding of Ant-Man, “He’s a fugitive as well. I think when you see the movie, you’ll understand the choice he made. Not dissimilar to Hawkeye.”

Here is the official synopsis for Ant-Man and the Wasp, which opens July 6:

“From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes ANT MAN AND THE WASP, a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink. In the aftermath of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside The Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past.”
