A Cook County Forest Preserves police officer has been assigned to desk duty after he was seen on video allowing an intoxicated white man to harass a latino woman who was wearing a shirt that featured the Puerto Rican flag, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting. The officer’s only concern appeared to be when another person of color approach the disorderly man in what seem like an attempt to control the situation. The officer immediately tells the man of color to stay away, while ignoring the actions of the white man’s misconduct for more than half an hour.
Video of the June 14 incident at an undisclosed Cook County Forest Preserve has since gone viral, garnering more than 1 million views on Facebook alone. As of Monday night, the 36-minute video was no longer available on the social media site. But shorter edited versions were still bouncing around Twitter and other platforms.
Monday, the Cook County Forest Preserves tweeted that the officer who provided the lax response had been placed on desk duty as the police department investigates.
Mia Irizarry, who said she had rented a forest preserve pavilion for a birthday party, posted the 36-minute video to her Facebook page on June 14.
The man, who has been charged with assault and disorderly conduct, can be seen approaching Irizarry and asking why she is wearing that shirt — which depicted a Puerto Rican flag — and questioning her citizenship status.
Cook County Board Chairman Toni Preckwinkle apologized to the woman via Twitter.
“We have worked very hard since 2010 to make the Forest Preserves of Cook County a welcoming and safe place for all,” she tweeted. “An incident in Caldwell Woods on June 14 in which a visitor to the Preserves was verbally harassed was appalling and completely unacceptable.”
“I am very sorry for the experience the young woman had to (endure) and I’m further troubled by the lack of response and action by the initial officer on the scene. The Forest Preserves immediately launched an investigation into the incident,” she tweeted.
“We take such incidents seriously, and if the investigation confirms the officer did not take appropriate steps to ensure public safety, disciplinary action will follow.”
