Four people were injured and three others are still unaccounted for after a massive explosion in Waukegan, Illinois at the AB Specialty Silicones factory.
On Twitter, Lake County (Illinois) Sheriff officials asked residents to stay away from the area. The explosion happened just after 9:30 p.m. local time Friday night, according to officials.
On Twitter, area residents described it shaking the ground and visible from far away.
At 10 p.m. the sheriff’s office issued an alert on Twitter saying it was “aware of a very loud explosion sound and ground shaking in the Gurnee area.”
Television images showed the plant almost totally destroyed. Waukegan is about 40 miles north of Chicago, on the shore of Lake Michigan.
