The father forgot the 11-month-olds were in the car as he went to work in New York that morning and found them in the back after he left Friday afternoon, police said.
Eleven-month-old twins were found dead in a car in the Bronx on Friday after their father seemingly forgot them while he went to work, New York police said.
The father, who police have not identified, unknowingly left his daughter and son in the car when he went to work Friday morning and discovered them dead in his Honda when he left for the afternoon around 4:30 p.m., according to the New York Police Department.
The man is a social worker at a nearby veteran’s hospital in Fordham Manor, NBC New York reported.
The case is under investigation, but law enforcement sources told NBC New York that charges are expected.
On Friday, temperatures in the area were in the mid-80s.
Two infants, 11-month-old boy and girl twins, were found dead in a car in the Bronx Friday after the children’s father forgot they were in there, New York police said.
Last year, 52 children died of vehicular heatstroke, according to information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It takes only about 10 minutes for the temperature inside a car to rise 20 degrees. When a person’s body temperature reaches 107 degrees, it is lethal, the safety administration said.
Dr. David Diamond, a professor of psychology at the University of South Florida, told NBC News in 2017 that any parent is capable of forgetting their child in a car. Diamond said that when a child is quiet and out of sight, parents can lose awareness.
“When you drive home and don’t normally take a child to daycare, when you have a habit and you are normally driving home from work — and in those subsets or maybe none at all take a child home — well, what happens in all these cases, the parent goes into autopilot mode, which is typically from home to work,” Diamond said.
When it comes to forgetting a child in the car, routines and breaks in those routines that can prove fatal, he said.
“Any person is capable of forgetting a child in a car under circumstances where a parent is going through a routine and the child is in the back,” Diamond said. “All those components, if they come into play, a child can die.”
