A memorandum showing notes of the conversation between Donald Trump and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has been released.
It shows Mr Trump encouraged Mr Zelensky to investigate his main 2020 rival Joe Biden. The release came the day after a formal impeachment inquiry was launched by Congress over the scandal around the president’s phone call with Ukraine.
Critics of the president have accused him of threatening to withhold military aid to the country to force an investigation into corruption allegations against Mr Biden and his son Hunter. Mr Biden spoke out against the president’s “abuse of power” last night and said if he refused to cooperate with an investigation, he would leave Congress with “no choice but to initiate impeachment”.
