Almost five years ago since James Corden premiered one of his most viral Carpool Karaoke to date, starring Justin Bieber. Now, many on the networks are shocked because they have just discovered that the presenter never drives during the recordings.

Carpool Karaoke is a section of the program The Late Late Show of the CBS network in which Corden invites artists to sing with him some of his songs while they wander through Los Angeles. The idea was born in a documentary in 2014 in which Corden was recorded singing in the car with Gary Barlow, of the British group Take That. A year later, the comedian proposed the idea to Mariah Carey and the singer agreed to star in the pilot, who instantly became iconic.

Bieber’s case is special. The singer of “Yummy” is on the way to star in his third Carpool Karaoke, becoming the musician who has led the special most times. And it has had to be this third time the one that arouses the most controversy following a tweet from the user Zoli Honig in which Corden and Bieber were seen inside a car towed through the streets of Los Angeles: “I have seen James Corden and Justin Bieber recording Carpool Karaoke and this is the reason I have trust issues: He is not even driving! ”

Honig’s tweet went especially viral throughout Thursday, with hundreds of thousands of people reacting to his video and declaring himself as surprised as he was: “ALL MY LIFE HAS BEEN A LIE.”

Because although Corden has released dozens of deliveries of Carpool Karaoke, thousands of his fans were unaware of a basic aspect of filming in Hollywood: in the vast majority of cases, cars are not driven by the protagonists, but are towed by another vehicle. The reasons are several, but they have to do mainly with the driver’s safety and field of vision, which may be obstructed by the cameras.

In general, the shooting uses what is known as a process trailer, or low platform trailer. The function of these vehicles is to keep the cars low enough so that the perspective of height of the protagonists with respect to the ground is realistic. It is that technical aspect, added to the talent of the actor to convince the audience that he is really driving, what little is enough to get a format like the Carpool Karaoke to work. And so much that it works!
