Honduras: President Juan Orlando Hernández reports that he has covid-19

(CNN) – Honduras President, Juan Orlando Hernández, tested positive for COVID-19, as reported by himself on radio and television.

Hernández added that he will continue his work by teleworking at the Tegucigalpa Military Hospital.

In a statement, the Honduran Presidency said that Hernández “maintained at all times the preventive measures recommended by the health authorities, however due to the nature of his work it was not possible to remain in total isolation, exposed to the risk of contagion.”

The president was diagnosed positive on Tuesday afternoon, the statement said.

First lady Ana García de Hernández also tested positive for laboratory tests, the announcement added.

According to the statement, the president has mild symptoms, while his wife is asymptomatic. Both have started a treatment suggested by Honduran doctors, called MAIZ, which includes microdacyn, azithromycin, ivermectin and zinc, says the official message.

On Wednesday, Honduras has registered 9,656 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 330 deaths.

The country reported 478 new cases and 8 deaths on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Guatemala President, Alejandro Giammattei, reacted on Twitter to the news of the positive from his counterpart in Honduras, who wished him a speedy recovery.

“I sympathize with the President of Honduras, @JuanOrlandoH and the First Lady, @anagarciacarias, regretting his positive result in the COVID-19 test,” wrote Giammattei.
