Biden Administration Unveils $400 Million Initiative for Rural High-Speed Internet

The Biden administration has unveiled a substantial commitment to improving high-speed internet access in rural America, announcing over $400 million in loans and grants aimed at connecting approximately 31,000 families and businesses across 11 states.

In a press briefing, White House Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Coordinator Mitch Landrieu emphasized the significance of this initiative, declaring, “Rural communities are integral to our nation’s foundation and economic strength. However, they have historically been overlooked. We are changing that by ensuring affordable, reliable high-speed internet access for rural America.” He credited President Biden, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, and the USDA Rural Development team for spearheading the effort.

The funding, allocated through the USDA ReConnect loan and grant program, will support the establishment, enhancement, and acquisition of infrastructure necessary for broadband connectivity in rural areas. Landrieu also hinted at forthcoming announcements regarding additional program funding throughout the summer.

Secretary Vilsack detailed that the $401 million investment will finance 20 projects spanning states such as Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, North Dakota, and Texas. He underscored the transformative impact of connectivity, citing benefits for farmers, expanded access to telemedicine, and enhanced educational opportunities through distance learning.

Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada highlighted specific benefits for her state, including a $27.1 million grant for Uprise Fiber to improve broadband access in rural Lovelock. The project aims to connect 4,000 residents, 130 businesses, 22 farms, and seven public schools to high-speed internet.

Earlier this month, the administration also celebrated the enrollment of one million households in the Affordable Connectivity Program, facilitated through GetInternet.gov. This initiative offers eligible households monthly credits of $30 towards their internet service, or $75 for households on Tribal lands, benefiting an estimated 40% of American households.

The announcement reflects ongoing efforts by the administration to advance infrastructure initiatives since President Biden took office. Unlike broader infrastructure projects, such as new roads and bridges, which require longer planning and execution timelines, the Affordable Connectivity Program delivers immediate benefits, enhancing its significance ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

Looking ahead, additional funding under the bipartisan infrastructure law for rural internet projects is anticipated next year, further bolstering efforts to bridge the digital divide in rural America.
