Removal of ‘X’ Following Twitter’s Rebrand: A Change in Perspective

Officials from the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection observed on Monday morning that the new “X” atop the building previously known as Twitter’s headquarters was being dismantled, as reported by Patrick Hannan, spokesperson for the department.

This development follows a notice of violation (NOV) issued to the company on Friday for undertaking work on the new flashing sign without a permit.

“During the weekend, the Department of Building Inspection and City Planning received 24 complaints regarding the unauthorized structure, including concerns about its structural integrity and nighttime lighting,” Hannan stated in an email.

“Inspectors this morning witnessed the structure being taken down. A permit is typically required for such removal, but due to safety considerations, it can be obtained after the dismantling is complete,” he clarified.

“The property owner will incur penalties for the unauthorized installation of the illuminated structure. These penalties will encompass fees for both the installation and removal permits, as well as covering the costs associated with the investigations conducted by the Department of Building Inspection and the Planning Department,” Hannan added.
