Japan Airlines Crew Repeats Landing Clearance Moments Before Collision, Revealed in Audio

Japan Airlines states its crew received clearance from air traffic control to land at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport before colliding with a Japan Coast Guard plane.

Audio recordings from LiveATC.net reveal that the crew of Japan Airlines Flight 516 was authorized to land on runway 34 right. They acknowledged this clearance by reading back “cleared to land 34 right.”

“Based on interviews with the operating crew, they acknowledged and repeated the landing clearance from air traffic control, and proceeded with the approach and landing procedures,” Japan Airlines stated in a recent release. Following the landing, the Airbus A350 collided with the Japan Coast Guard aircraft and caught fire.

Japan Airlines reported that the cockpit crew consisted of three members, with nine cabin crew members on board. The flight carried a total of 367 passengers, including 359 adults and 8 infants. Tragically, five individuals aboard the Japan Coast Guard Dash 8 aircraft lost their lives.

Remarkably, Japan Airlines noted that only one person on board their aircraft sustained bruises, although 13 passengers requested medical attention due to physical discomfort.
