Meek Mill will soon be a free man.
The 30-year-old rapper’s lawyer, Brian McMonagle, told CBS News on Tuesday that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court had ordered the rapper’s immediate release. Mill, born Robert Rihmeek Williams, was sentenced to two to four years in prison in November for violating probation on a nearly decade-old gun and drug case, and was serving time at a state correctional institution in Chester, Pennsylvania.
The “Dreams and Nightmares” rapper tweeted about his time behind bars on Tuesday, thanking “God, my family, and all my public advocates for their love, support and encouragement during this difficult time.”
“While the past five months have been a nightmare, the prayers, visits, calls, letters and rallies have helped me stay positive,” he continued. The rapper has received public support from famous friends and fans throughout the music community, including JAY-Z and Beyonce, who made the call to “Free Meek” in their latest collab with DJ Khaled, “Top Off.”
“To the Philly District Attorney’s office, I’m grateful for your commitment to justice. I understand that many people of color across the country don’t have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues,” Mill also tweeted. “In the meantime, I plan to work closely with my legal team to overturn this unwarranted conviction and look forward to reuniting with my family and resuming my music career.”
The rapper’s friend and fellow Philadelphia native, Kevin Hart, posted about Mill’s release on Tuesday, writing on Instagram that the two had just spent time together, with Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael G. Rubin.
“Meek Mill is Frrrrreeeeeeeee,” Hart captioned a pic of the trio. “I just left from seeing him in jail with @michaelgrubin and we were just told that he is being released. Woooooooow……Stand Up Philadelphia!!!!!”
Rubin later posted the same pic, writing that he was on his way back to pick up the rapper following his release.
Mill’s ex, Nicki Minaj, opened up about the rapper’s imprisonment in her infamous Beats 1 interview earlier this month.
“I wouldn’t wish jail on anybody,” Minaj said. “What made me shed tears the other day was seeing his mother cry…. She, during the relationship, was always so sweet to me.”
