Thousands of employees will occupy today, Tuesday, the Golden Mile and Old San Juan to repudiate the reforms promoted by the government of Ricardo Rosselló and the Fiscal Oversight Board, as well as claim more rights as part of the celebration of the International Day of workers .

 

It is expected that several marches will conglomerate in two points of the capital of Puerto Rico to make their claims.

One of the demonstrations will consist of a march that will leave the Puente Dos Hermanos starting at 10:30 am, at the entrance of the islet of Old San Juan, up to the Capitol.

Meanwhile, diverse groups will march from several points in Hato Rey and will join in the Golden Mile, the main banking area of ​​the island. They would remain at the intersection of Luis Muñoz Marín and Roosevelt avenues, near the offices of the Fiscal Board.

Some businesses have determined not to operate today in front of the crowd of protesters expected in the so-called national strike , among which Plaza Las Américas stands out.

Follow the incidents of this day of protests:

9:31 am –  The Vice President of the Utier, Freddyson Martinez, says he expects an “excellent and massive mobilization of all active and retired workers of the Utier”.

9:27 am – That’s the way it is at the Hiram Bithorn stadium about an hour before the start of the march to the Golden Mile.

9:24 am – Residents of the municipality of Vieques say they are present at the national strike. 

9:23 am – Wilmarí De Jesús, representative of university students from the Río Piedras campus in the UPR Governing Board, says that the increase in credit approved yesterday is just one of the reasons for participating in the strike.He recalled that on Thursday there is a student assembly.

9:05 am – Nearly a hundred protesters have gathered around the Department of Labor and Human Resources, from where they plan to march further to the Golden Mile.

Within the group could be seen at some point a handful of young people dressed in black and with their faces covered, something that is prohibited by law and that the police warned in advance that they would not allow during the protests.

However, at the moment none of the agents stationed on the other side of Muñoz Rivera Avenue has intervened with the hooded ones.

At the moment, the avenue continues to be open to traffic, and protesters continue to arrive, gradually joining the group that waits on the sidewalk in front of the DTRH.  

9:02 am –  Javier Córdoba, interim president of the Puerto Rican Association of University Professors (APPU), said that “the university professors march in repudiation of the fiscal plans of Puerto Rico and the UPR … they want to dismantle the main university educational project of the country and we can not allow it. ”

8:50 am – “We can not support a penny reduction in our pensions, we will not allow it,” said one member of the Pro Pensionados Movement.

8:46 am –  Representatives of the Federation of Teachers of Puerto Rico, begin to arrive at the headquarters of the Department of Education where they will leave to join the national strike.

8:40 am  The president of the Central Puertorriqueña de Trabajadores, Pedro Irene Maymí, mentioned that he expects that at 10:00 am there will be a large presence of workers at Puente Dos Hermanos to leave for the Capitol.

8:30 am – There are not many protesters in the area of ​​Puente Dos Hermanos, from where the march to the Capitol will take place, convened by the Central Puertorriqueña de Trabajadores .However, they already warned that buses begin to arrive with the public.
