New York Stands With Puerto Rico Breakfast

This morning’s breakfast with the Governor of New York pre the 2018 Puerto Rican Parade had a set theme, “New York  Stands With Puerto Rico”.  There were many notable leaders joining the Honorable Governor Cuomo, including The Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz of  Puerto Rican decent and Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez who was born in Puerto Rico.  Also, well mentioned and recognized was Roberto Mujica who is the highest appointed Puerto Rican in the State of New York managing the State Budget Office.

The focus of the breakfast was “bitter sweet”, as stated by the Governor. Surrounding he’s speech of solidarity for the island after the disastrous Hurricane Maria and lack of effort received by Washington to respond and assist in Puerto Rico’s recovery. He recognized and honored all men and women across the great State of New York from all it’s cities and counties that said New York should and will help Puerto Rico. He also recognized the bond that exist between the people of Puerto Rico and New York State.

After the Governor we had Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez reminisced on the challenges and struggle in Washington. The many road blocks she faced going through the appropriations committee and gathering support from other members in Congress.  She mentioned having received enormous support from Gov. Cuomo, who helped guided her through much of the Washington beaucracy.

The Governor has definitely demonstrated his commitment for Puerto Rico and still continous to do so.  He is organizing a group of volunteers to go to Puerto Rico during the summer and help rebuild homes from the bottom up. He joked from when he told his daughter that they are going to PR and she was excited of finally getting a good tan, only to get her bubble burst when he said “No we’re going there to work!”.   It’s more than noted that while some have gone on to the next topic, he is still committed to the future of the island.  This is a great example of a leader, of not only New Yorkers, but of Americans.
