Captain Marvel: Who is the powerful heroine of the Marvel Universe?

No one doubts that Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful super heroines in the Marvel Universe. We already saw it and we have a list of the film’s review, which subverts the genre of superheroes “in the best possible way”. In addition, Captain Marvel  pays homage to the legendary Stan Lee (1922-2018), who managed to film one of his famous cameos for the film.

Captain Marvel debuts on March 8 and its pre-sale of tickets suggests it could raise US $ 125 million on its first weekend of exhibition in the United States, according to Variety.

What the trailers reveal

Marvel Studios launched two official trailers and a teaser (identified as Special Look). In the three advances a scene is repeated in which Captain Marvel hits an old woman.

In addition, last February, Disney aired a special commercial during the intermission of Super Bowl 2019.

Who is Captain Marvel?

The reason why there is so much interest in the character of Captain Marvel, one of the most powerful super heroines of the Marvel comics, is that it is mentioned in the post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War (2018).

In this sequence, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Maria Hill (Colbie Smulders) move through New York when Thanos snaps his fingers with his Infinity Glove, dusting half of the population of the universe.

When Fury realizes the seriousness of the situation, and shortly before he himself disappears, he sends a message with a strange pager (pager), on whose screen you can see the symbol of Captain Marvel: a yellow star on red stripes (above) and blue (below).

The character has not yet been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as she will be known in her own film, Captain Marvel, which premieres on March 8, 2019, two months before Avengers Endgame .

It is obvious that Captain Marvel is essential in Avengers Endgame, because Nick Fury would not have summoned it if he did not know that she has the ability to face Thanos and defeat him. That’s why, to know how formidable she is as Thanos’s opponent, we delved into the story of Captain Marvel.

Origins of the character

Captain Marvel was originally a character from the publisher Fawcette Comics, but she was so much like Superman that DC Comics sued the company to stop its publication. So Captain Marvel was out of circulation until Marvel Comics got the rights in December 1967, when she relaunched the character in a cartoon written by Stan Lee and drawn by Gene Colan.

Captain Marvel received a new origin story: Mar-Vell is an extraterrestrial military officer belonging to the Imperial Kree Militia, which sends her to Earth to watch over the human space plans. But Captain Marvel prefers to take the side of the earthlings, with what becomes a traitor for the Kree.

The character becomes a protector of the Earth and, after several adventures, acquires super cosmic powers, which can be transferred with the title of Captain Marvel. That’s why several characters have assumed this identity, which is more common in comics than you think.

Six people have been Captain Marvel throughout 50 years of history: Mar-Vell, Mónica Rambeau (a New Orleans police lieutenant), Genis-Vell, Phyla-Vell, Khn’nr (you know how to pronounce it ) and Carol Danvers.

Danvers is the current Captain Marvel and will be performed by actress Brie Larson in the film of the same name in 2019 and, hopefully, in Avengers Endgame.  Samuel L. Jackson also participates as Nick Fury, who will be rejuvenated on screen with computer effects, since the film is set in 1995.

What are your powers?

The character of Carol Danvers is 50 years old created in the comics. It is an invention of the screenwriter Roy Thomas and the cartoonist Gene Colan for the copy Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (March 1968).  There, Danvers is a pilot of the American air force, friend of Mar-Vell, the military kree that was the original Captain Marvel.

In January of 1977, Danvers became the superheroine Ms. Marvel, when, after an explosion, her DNA merged with that of Captain Marvel, acquiring her powers.  Since then, the character has also used more names such as Binary and Warbird, among others, and has been a member sometimes of both the Avengers and the X-Men.  And, since 2012, Danvers is officially the new Captain Marvel.
