Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday criticized a television announcement of a new political action committee aligned with Republicans who calls her “ignorant” and sets her image on fire. “Republicans are publishing television ads burning photos of me to convince people that they are not racist,” the New York Democrat tweeted. “Life is strange!” The 30-second announcement, which was issued during the National Democrats debate on Thursday on ABC news, is the first public touch of the New Faces GOP PAC, led by former congressional candidate Elizabeth Heng.
It opens with an image of Ocasio-Cortez, whom Heng calls the “face of socialism and ignorance.” Ocasio-Cortez’s face burns to reveal images of skulls. Heng, a Cambodian American promoted as a young rising Republican star during her failed attempt to obtain a seat in the US House of Representatives in California last year, recounts her family’s escape from socialism in Cambodia at the post of 30 seconds. “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez knows the horror of socialism?” Heng asks. “Mine is the face of freedom,” Heng tells the camera during the closing seconds of the announcement. “My skin is not white. I am not outrageous, racist or socialist. I am republican”.
The ad was faced with outrage online, and #BoycottABC was trending early Friday morning. In a press release prior to the announcement, the PAC organizers say the mission is twofold: to expand the image of the Republican Party and “lead the fight against socialism.” The group, which was formally launched in March, reported that it raised a little more than $ 170,000 until the end of June, largely from California-based donors, records from the Federal Election Commission show.
