K-pop star Goo Hara dies

South Korean singer and actress Goo Hara was found dead Sunday, Gangnam district police in Seoul.

Police did not comment on the cause of death, but plans to hold a press conference on Monday morning.

The singer, once part of the South Korean girl band Kara, was found unconscious at her home in Seoul in May, after having published the word “Goodbye” on her Instagram account. The post, which was later deleted, prompted comments from concerned fans.

On that occasion, Goo was found and taken to the hospital. He later apologized to his fans for “causing everyone concern and causing shock,” a media outlet in Japan reported.

The episode revived the debate about the intense pressure of K-pop stardom, which critics say is driven by harsh online criticism directed at industry artists.

A similar discussion broke out last month after the 25-year-old singer Sulli was found dead at her home in Seoul, in which police said it was an apparent suicide.
