First migrant caravan of 2020 arrives in Guatemala heading to the US

A new migrant caravan, the first of 2020, left Honduras fleeing poverty and insecurity with a fixed eye on a destination: the United States.

Despite the few possibilities they have to achieve their goal of arriving in the United States fleeing their country of origin in search of a better life, hundreds of migrants who left Honduras arrived in Guatemala towards the giant of America.

The new caravan of migrants will encounter a radical change in the way the governments of the different countries “welcome them”, since after the caravans that entered since 2018 the environment has become more tense and more difficult.

Immigration controls are now stricter in Guatemala, accompanied by agents of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Control Service (ICE).

However, this is not the only test that Honduran immigrants should pass, since while Guatemalan officials verify that the documents are necessary to be in the country, the National Guard of Mexico is already deployed and if they manage to reach States Together, the authorities are deciding if they are granted asylum, if they wait in Mexico indefinitely or if they are sent back home.

Political problems for new migrant caravan

The president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammettei, began his government with the political “problem” that unleashed the new migrant caravan, since he assured that the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, had warned him that Mexico will not allow the passage of Hundreds of Honduran migrants.

Through his official Twitter account, Ebrard confirmed that migration was one of the issues discussed during his meeting with Giammattei during his visit to Guatemala, however he did not offer more details or denied the facts.

Recall that in 2018 Donald Trump threatened Mexico with tariffs on all Mexican imports if the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) did not do something so that migrants did not reach US soil.
