Earthquakes 6.6 (6.4) and Then 6.0 in Puerto Rico Leave Death

An  earthquake  of magnitude 6.6, which was later revised as 6.4 in the report of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has shaken the south coast of Puerto Rico on Tuesday  . The earthquake was recorded at 4.24 local time (9.24 in peninsular Spain), with an epicenter 13 kilometers from Ponce and a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Then at 7:26 am (Puerto Rico time) another tremor of magnitude 6.0 was reported. So far more structural damage is reported, a death in the Ponce area due to earthquakes and several power outages.

According to reports from the city of Ponce, said Gladyra Archilla, representative of the city and neighboring Reynoaldo Gonzalez, a 77-year-old man by the name of Nelson Martinez Guillot died from the collapse of a wall.

In the last two weeks, the USGS reports that hundreds of small earthquakes have happened in that same area. The Pacific tsunami warning center has said that “there is no significant tsunami threat”, but “a small possibility of waves near the epicenter’s shores.” 

“It was super strong. I have been able to hear vibrations everywhere, ”said a witness 14 kilometers from the epicenter. Another witness, in Caimital, 67 kilometers from the point where the quake has occurred, has said that the tremor has lasted about 30 seconds”. 

This Monday, another 5.8 quake hit southern Puerto Rico and caused damage to various homes in the towns of Guanica and Guayanila. In addition, many cars were damaged.
