Earthquake of magnitude 5.4 shook Puerto Rico on Saturday morning

Puerto Rico – A strong tremor of magnitude 5.4. (readjusted by the USGS) was reported in Puerto Rico, on Saturday morning at about 7:13 am



With a preliminary scale of 5.5., The epicenter is located south of Guánica and there was no tsunami announcement. People in the north of the island report having felt it and 

At around 7:19 a preliminary magnitude replica of 4.8 was reported, followed by one of 4.5.



Víctor Huérfano, director of the Puerto Rico Seismic Network, told El Nuevo Día that “There was a fairly strong earthquake felt throughout Puerto Rico. Particularly in the southwest area. It has already adjusted to 5.2. We have an intensity of V in Yauco, but other reports that go down to VI in Guánica.

The Isla del Encanto has experienced moments of panic at the beginning of the year when strong earthquakes were constantly being reported, and some of them causing serious damage. Since the beginning of February no earthquakes of this magnitude were reported.



Ada Monzón, a meteorologist from Puerto Rico, quickly made a video in which she asked for calm about everything, but she told people who are in weak structures to leave their residences. The Island remains under curfew due to the coronavirus outbreak which, precisely on Saturday, added 182 new cases for a total of 1,757 positive cases and 95 deaths.

“If there is a situation in which you are involved, you should get out,” said Monzón. “Come out with a mask, go out with gloves,” she said.



Meanwhile, the governor of Puerto Rico, who keeps the haiza under curfew due to the coronavirus outbreak, asked for calm through her social networks. “Our people calm down. We are on alert for any emergency situation. If your structure is compromised, you should go out with your emergency mask and backpack. Attentive to any official information. Stay safe,” she posted.
